Vriezoo B.V. developed and deployed a specific Mattress Installation Tool (MIT) for a cable route in Iceland. This project was carried out in collaboration with Köfunarþjónustan ehf. and Mark Offshore. It included the provision of ROV services, support with DP vessels and survey activities.
The assignment involved the precise placement of underwater mattresses in preparation for a cable route. Given the currents of up to 4 knots at the installation site, a customised solution was necessary. The system was designed and built entirely in-house.
The solution developed, called the Magenta Tool, was constructed by integrating components from two ROVs. These included eight thrusters, underwater control systems, cameras, sonar, a cable follower and an altimeter, all brought together in a single unit. A hydraulic power pack is present to operate the mattress mechanism. Magenta was chosen as the colour because of its visibility in the clear waters around Iceland, which improved the precision of the operations.
The design, construction and testing of the tool were carried out in-house. After the test phase, the equipment was mobilised on board the BB Ocean, operated by Buksér og Berging AS, for the execution of offshore operations in Iceland.
Thanks to all those involved for their expertise, dedication and teamwork that made this project a success.
